Who Needs to Register for VAT?

If your business or sole trader earns £90,000 or more in a year, you need to register for VAT with HMRC. You can do this online or have your accountant do it.You usually need to send VAT returns every three months. However, HMRC lets you do it monthly or yearly if that suits you better. To follow the rules, make sure to keep your VAT records for at least six years.

Making Tax Digital for VAT

From April 1st, 2019, if your business earns more than £90,000, you must use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT. This means you need special software to manage your VAT. At Active Accountants, we can help you pick the best software for your business.

With MTD, you need to:

  • Charge the right amount of VAT to customers
  • Record the VAT you pay to suppliers
  • Send VAT returns to HMRC
  • Pay any VAT you owe to HMRC
  • Keep VAT records and a VAT account

Good software can help you calculate VAT, submit returns, and keep records.

What is the VAT Rate?

The usual VAT rate is 20%. This rate applies to many products and services, including things businesses buy and things sold to customers. But there are some exceptions:

  • VAT Exemptions and Zero-Rating: Some items like books, newspapers, children’s clothes, some foods and drinks, and goods sent out of the UK either don’t have VAT or none.

Reduced Rate: A 5% VAT rate applies to things like home heating, energy-saving materials, and child car seats.
